I'm thinking about changing my major to History and I was just wondering if you could give me advice or like a small day in the life of a History major, if you don't mind of course :)
Well I’ll begin by stating that having a love for History is a crucial part of being a History major, because finding a career that pays well after getting a degree isn’t very likely. Many History majors go on to become teachers, but there are many other choices. You can work in a museum, a History degree might also allow you to work for the government, you can write books or work in libraries. The only problem is that an undergraduate in History is only a stepping stone, you will need to at least complete a graduate program to actually begin to work within the field.
I personally LOVE my major. "Because it’s not just words in a book; it’s places, people, smells and memories. Touching a piece of the roman wall in London, interviewing a WWII veteran, categorizing death records from the American Civil War is history.
History is people’s lives, actions and memories. It’s a study, but also an experience. It’s not for the faint of heart, but for the strong of mind who dares to remember not only the good, but the bad of the world.” -eidolonnature.tumblr.com
Important things to remember:
-The work load is intense. You will always be researching something, writing papers will be your life, and Chicago style citations will become your new best friend. The research librarian and archivist at your university will also be people you see/email frequently.
-You may have a certain time period that sticks out to you unlike others and that is great. Every time you are able to take a class in that subject or choose your own topic for a research paper use that as a chance to broaden your knowledge of the subject. But also take classes in areas of History that aren’t exactly your cup of tea, this will allow you to become a more critical thinker. (and who doesn’t enjoy learning more anyway :D. )
-Most important! If you find a professor that you click with try and take as many classes with them as you can. Each professor within any History department teaches differently then their colleagues (the downside of not actually having a degree in education). Knowing a professor and their teaching styles can better prepare you for papers and exams. Also turning a paper in before its due date to get feedback is an excellent way to tailor the paper to exactly what that specific professor is looking for.
-Networking in crucial, have to get those letters of recommendation somehow. Whether it be with other students or professors try and make great impressions of yourself. I have gained some of my closet friends since joining the History department, they are an amazing support system, as well as peer reviewers since they also know what is expected of your writing.
-Don’t be afraid to ask questions either. A History student is a critical thinker, you will be learning how to look and use at the evidence in front of you to form and argue your own conclusion.
-Learn to love constructive criticism. Reviewers and graders alike are not there to tear apart your entire paper, they are there to help you strengthen your writing. The first semester or so it is hard to remember that because the comments can be rough.
FINALLY!!! ENJOY IT! It can be stressful, it can seem like the reading assignments are an unreasonable, you may want to quit, but if you hang in there it is extremely rewarding. Studying History opens your eyes to the world around you, allowing you to make connections and form opinions on your own. There is a kindred spirit amongst History majors, even though we love to debate and prove each other wrong, we respect one another. Being a respectful, helpful, and understanding is how to go about being a History major. Not to mention the friends you make will actually understand you silly History humor, nothing like a good pun in the middle of finals week.
