Keeping the Heat on this Winter
A friend of mine recently suggested that I check out a new startup in New York City she met while attending the Data for Good Exchange. She knows how I get when I hear about projects at the intersection of technology and social impact. The exciting startup is called Heat Seek, and they believe no one should have to spend their winter in a frigid apartment and I wholeheartedly agree.
I imagine the folks in New York don't like to freeze their finger off either. Regardless, there are rules about this kind of thing and Heat Seek wants to see them upheld. By appropriately leveraging data and IoT, HeatSeek provides tenants with an unbiased voice in court, when they go to defend their heating claims.
Let's take a stab at rebuilding their Cold Map.
On Heat Seeks site, they tell us they got their data from NYC 311. Not being from NYC, I had no idea what NYC 311 was, so time to do some research.
Turns out, New York has it together when it comes to filing complaints. Best of all, these complaints land Socrata where we can search, filter and export all the open data, including these service requests.
This link will get us started.
Below is my recreation of their map. Take some time to reverse engineer this work and improve upon it.
