brianna returned from the kitchen balancing two mugs, steam curling up from both as she headed over to join her on the couch. she set one down in front of maddie with a casual grace, the other held loosely in her hand as she eased onto the couch beside her, close enough that their knees brushed. subtle, but intentional. she didn’t so much as blink at the pile of knives still cooling on her counter. just raised a brow and took a slow sip of her coffee. “for the record, you passed the vibe check. barely,” she teased, the corner of her mouth curving up as her eyes lingered on Maddie’s. “you act like i dragged you here at gunpoint.” she stretched out just enough for her shoulder to nudge the blonde’s, then reached lazily for the remote. “and don’t knock the rom-coms. i only put them on to lull people into a false sense of security while I decide if i like them on my couch or not.” she said as she scrolled through a handful of movies before finally deciding on one. brianna grinned as she turned her head toward maddie again. “so far? not terrible.” she took another sip, eyes glinting over the rim of her mug. “be honest, is this the weirdest chase you’ve ever been on, or just the most interesting?” brianna teased. “and before you lie, just remember I’ve seen how many knives you keep strapped to your legs, so.” her smile went soft and sly, her thigh still resting against maddie’s. “c'mon i can't imagine anyone offering you drinks and coffee."

missy would blame the hormones if she had to. it felt like an easy out for the both of them. it wasn't that she had caught feelings over past month or whatever it was constance had worked with her. no it had nothing to do with how constance had checked in on her one of those first nights when she heard her cry, or held her hand in the doctor office waiting room when she was nervous for her baby appointment, or the way she always knew that quiet reassurance that calmed her down if things got a little crazy. it wasn't that or that sometimes missy thought constance was one of the few people who actually saw her. not the celebrity or the one who's fiancé left her for another woman or the woman about to have a baby on her own. maybe she saw missy.
