(not to make this joke into a semi-serious thing BUT)
He really did a lot in season 1 because of Bellamy, because Bellamy said something, or because he thought Bellamy would like it.
Him putting a girl close to a fire? Because he thought Bellamy would think it's a good idea. He calls for Bellamy when he does it, because Bellamy wants the ark to think they're dead.
Him keeping everyone working (and therefore getting upset with water breaks)? Bellamy. He's trying to be in control the way Bellamy is. He's trying to keep everything in line for Bellamy even when he's not around.
And I'm not going to keep listing because I'm lazy, so maybe I'm wrong for not giving more examples lol
Most of his actions in season 1 can be explained by Murphy seeing Bellamy, a hot guy, and going "yes, okay, I need to do everything so he is happy"JGDIDTYIDDIYDUT
So he does things that aren't 100% right, because he thinks Bellamy would agree with them, and therefore like him more.
