Heddon Street is becoming quite the hub of decent restaurants. We were recently at Piccolino (read our review here) and this time, we were out for a quick bite and ended up at Magpie, the sister of Pidgin in Hackney.
The place does small plates so we started with a portion of fried chicken. It came with a sriracha like sauce and was really tasty. It was crunchy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside.
Next up is beef tartare on toast. I love beef tartare and this was a bit of a twist on the standard but still so good. It came on thin slices of toast with taleggio cream and truffle crisps. Definitely order it if it’s on the menu!
This was a small dish of pork cheek. The pork cheek was great; it’d been slow cooked to tenderness and came with grilled baby gem lettuce.
We also ordered the steak that came with rosemary potatoes and onion. The potatoes were actually pretty outstanding. They were super crispy on the outside with lots of little crunchy bits. The beef was nicely cooked to medium rare and full of flavour.
You can’t really tell from the photo but this was a dish of tenderstem broccoli with tempura battered and fried silken tofu and fried penne pasta. The pasta was pretty cool in that after being fried, they had puffed up and become crispy. The broccoli was well cooked but the star of the show for me was the tofu.
It was just a quick dinner so we didn’t order too much but the stuff that we did was all really tasty. The beef tartare was my favourite of all the dishes but everything was really impressive. I’d definitely recommend this place.
