Round 1, Match 91 — Hedi Boy vs. Clowncore
Hedi Boy is an aesthetic and style archetype that draws from the signature ultra-slim, rock 'n' roll-influenced silhouette pioneered by designer Hedi Slimane during his tenures at Dior Homme (2000–2006), Yves Saint Laurent (2012–2016), and Celine (2018–2024). The Hedi Boy is defined not only by specific clothing but by a calculated attitude of frontman-esque nonchalance, bravado, and self-aware irony. The aesthetic experienced a strong revival in the 2020s via TikTok, where it became known as "Haute Indie Sleaze," directly countering the preceding years of loose, comfortable silhouettes in menswear. The aesthetic is characterized by a specific silhouette that emphasizes length, narrowness, and a dark, monochromatic palette reminiscent of the Goth and Emo subcultures, elevated by luxury tailoring. The look uses garments worn skin-tight and dark-neutral. Ultra-skinny denim jeans or tailored trousers are the undisputed foundation. Flares are a more "frisky" variation, but the emphasis remains on the slim fit. The preferred jackets are the black leather jacket (often cropped or motorcycle-style) or structured, minimal jackets like the Harrington. The style is often characterized by layering sportswear items, such as track tops, underneath outerwear. Accessories and styling are highly important for conveying the necessary "rockstar" attitude. Boots are considered mandatory, typically featuring a pointed toe and a slight heel (Cuban heels or winkle pickers). Canvas sneakers, like Converse Chuck Taylors, are used for casual wear. Accessories include studded belts, chunky silver rings, and black Wayfarer-style sunglasses (often worn indoors). The hairstyle is often the soft Mod cut, a voluminous trim that maintains the nostalgic link to the 1960s subculture. For the attitude, the look demands bravado and perceived intimidation. The entire persona is often framed as being an anti-social, coffee-fueled creative who values indie rock culture and is not afraid to be disliked.
vs.
Clowncore (also known as Circuscore) surrounds things such as clowns, mimes, and jesters, as well as things associated with them such as carnivals and fanfare in general. It is often based in childhood nostalgia. Content from this aesthetic is usually bright and happy and childish, similar to Kidcore, although some portrayals of clowncore can have horror influences related to creepy/killer clowns. Other related aesthetics similar to clowncore can also have suggestive and adult content. The modern revival of this aesthetic was primarily fueled by the no longer active expressionist, Chase Rebecca, otherwise known as NewWorldEgo by the aesthetic community. Clowncore aesthetic visuals include clowns, soft toys, rainbows, stickers, circus tents, worms on strings, birthday cake, cotton candy, balloons, clown emojis, gumballs, ice cream, pom-poms, circus animals such as elephants, confetti, and carnival rides.
