For the members of an information society the ability to process large amounts of data is a necessity. Therefore, evolutionary processes and improvements in the development of so-called smart drugs are likely to raise the pace of our perception. But in a society predicated on the transfer and consumption of information, the wish for never-ending cognitive function will replace the desire for endless healthiness and beauty. How will the Digital Natives deal with this? What other kinds of services could emerge together with the future developments in smart drug medication?
FlashFlowReader Prototype Process 1 from Ludwig Zeller on Vimeo.
going off my last post, the Dromolux is sort of the antithesis to many of the theories and solutions evoked in the Hedonistic Imperative. instead of addressing pain and happiness, Ludwig Zeller confronts another major issue that members of our information-driven society face: information overload. the possibility of increasing our cognitive processing speed, our information intake, is an exciting prospect - and one I am infinitely interested in exploring. some prescription 'smart drugs" (Adderall, Ritalin) are used by college students to help them memorize and cram the massive amounts of information a contemporary college education demands. Zeller seems to view this approach as potentially harmful, exploring what can be understood as a mechanical alternative to 'smart drugs,' which have potentially negative side-effects. A machine like the Dromolux could theoretically "ween" those addicted off of the drugs, while simultaneously enhancing information processing in the human brain with a speed reading apparatus. it would provide increased cognitive functioning without any (obvious) negative side-effects.
