Seeing Hedwig was better than I could have ever imagined. It was also my very first time seeing Darren in person and I was just mezmorized by him. I mean I’ve always known he’s a superstar but it’s so different to get to see him up on the stage in all his glory. I would have sat in that theatre and watched the show a million more times if I could have.
I got to the theatre way early but as I anticipated there were already people lined up. I talked to some nice people from Australia who told me about what the show has been like since they’d been a few times.
I’m not sure what time they sold out exactly but I do know they sold out the whole show plus the standing room in the back was full. It felt great to be there on one of Darre’s last nights with so many other people who loved and supported him as well.
I ended up sitting near a woman and her family who I think probably didn’t know what Hedwig was about when they came or at least she didn’t. She kept sighing loudly during different parts of the show and I got the impression it wasn’t her thing.
I was also sitting near a Darren stan / seriously obnoxious mia/rren shipper. You know the kind of people who think they own Darren just because they’ve met him more times than other people and they seem to think that makes them his bestest friend in the whole world. The minute she saw Mia she was freaking out like she saw someone of actual talent and was screaming to her friends in another part of the theatre that Mia was there and that she’d changed her hair color. 0_o I think you just don’t realize the extent of some people’s insanity until you see it for yourself up close and personal.
I wish I could describe every feeling I had while watching Darren as Hedwig but it was just other worldly. I’ve been watching the bootleg like every day since I found it but it doesn’t even compare one bit to seeing it live.
Maybe it’s just me since I haven’t seen any of the other shows but it seemed like Darre added a little bit more sex to this one. Lots of sex references (squirting, come), he touched his body a lot, gaging noises. There was a bunch of stuff after Sugar Daddy. Not that I’m complaining I loved every minute.
Yes Hedwig did send a lady out of her seat after people were cheering for Yitzhak but it was obviously part of the show and the woman was laughing about it. I couldn’t see who he carwashed but he licked all over this one man (Andy I think his name was) in the front row. He had a lot of fun with him.
It’s obvious Darren loves doing the little nod to Chris you can tell on his face when he says the col-fur joke. I also think it’s fucking hilarious that he’s now thrown in something about Mamma Mia finally ending especially when she was there.
I left towards the end of curtain call to try and get a place out front for the stage door and it was still very hard. Other people had places saved for them, got there faster because they left way early (rude), had standing room only (and left early), or didn’t pay for a ticket. Regardless there were definitely people there who had met Darren multiple times even at Hedwig and were still standing at the very front of the barrier blocking people who had never even met him.
One of the security guards for the theater had to tell a girl to back up and give people room and that she knows her she’s always here and to give others a chance. When Darre finally came out (around midnight) he said something pretty similar about giving people who’ve never had anything signed a chance and also that he couldn’t take selfies (though he did stop for some anyway :P).
I wasn’t too far from the front but I still didn’t get the chance to talk to him. I made sure to keep my phone down when he came in front of me because you could tell he didn’t like having the phones shoved in this face. Right before he got to my area he had signed for this girl and guy and all she did was take pictures of him the whole time he was in front of her and didn’t really say anything to him. Darren said something to her about putting the phone down and experiencing life as it’s happening in front of you. He wasn’t mad but it’s just like you can tell he doesn’t want people just there for their selfie so they can have 5 seconds of internet fame with it.
I got to pass my playbill upfront and I tried to say something to him when he was in front of my area but there were too many people in front of me and too many people already talking. He stayed for a long time afterwards signing things for people and I tried to stay behind hoping I’d meet him for a second but it just wasn’t going to happen this time. I’m a little disappointed I didn’t get the chance to tell him how fucking amazing I thought the show was or much he’s affected my life but I’m really just grateful I got his autograph and the chance to see him in his element before the show ended.
