hello author!!! may we have an insight into how you think the hermits’ and ex’s first meeting went? 👀
Xisuma hovered at the top of the stairs, one hand holding onto the banister with a white-knuckled grip while the other still sat in a cast and sling. Downstairs, he could hear the murmurs of the Hermits in the living room, a muted buzz that only served to make him more nervous.
The bathroom door opened with a creak. Xisuma listened to the footsteps as they drew closer, and glanced over as Ex stopped next to him on the first stair.
Brown hair cut short and dyed red at the tips, denim vest covered in patches and pins, multiple piercings visible in his ears: Xisuma answered the door last night to a phantom of the past, so different and yet so achingly familiar it nearly brought tears to his eyes. He had met Ex's gaze, glanced at the duffle bag slung over one shoulder, and silently stood aside to let him in.
They'd stayed up until five in the morning, quietly talking in Xisuma's room about the last few years apart and plans for what came next. Ex had been ready to sleep on the floor, but in the end they'd been so tired that they both fell asleep on the bed, half on and half off.
Now they stood at the top of the stairs, about to walk down to the Hermits, where they would properly meet Ex for the first time.
Safe to say, Xisuma was nervous.
"Hey," Ex said. "Stop it."
"I'm not doing anything."
"You're worrying. It's making me worry, and I stopped worrying about things two years ago. So cut it out."
Xisuma shot him a dry look. "How motivational."
Ex laughed delightedly. The hum downstairs seemed to quiet for a moment before resuming at its previous volume.
Xisuma sighed and let go of the banister to scrub his good hand down his face. The few hours of sleep he got wouldn't be enough to get him through this.
"Shall we, then?" he asked, and walked down the stairs before Ex could answer.
Turning the corner revealed the living room as it usually was: full of Hermits. Thankfully the campus Hermits had returned to their dorm, and most of the gals had similarly departed for home; but that still left thirteen Hermits and one overly suspicious Cleo, who had stayed behind to make sure everyone went to bed last night and stopped bothering Xisuma.
"Good morning," Xisuma said. A chorus of greetings replied him, but few eyes strayed from the gangly figure hovering behind him in the doorway.
"Is that him, then?" Doc asked. "Come in, punk, we don't bite."
"You must be the German mafia boss I spoke to on the phone," Ex replied without missing a beat. He stepped into the room and waved to the Hermits with a sardonic grin. "Hello, hello, I come in peace and all that. Feel free to ask me anything you want, I have no secrets."
Ren immediately perked up. "What kind of music do you listen to?'
"Anything in the rock genre and heavy metal. Other stuff too, I'm not picky."
"What's your favorite color?" Grian asked.
"Red. I have to say, this is a very low stakes interrogation. "
Cleo crossed her arms, carefully neutral. "Why haven't you contacted X before now?"
"At first, it was because I needed to create a new life for myself and figure out what the hell I was going to do with it. Later, it was plain cowardice. I wasn't sure how X would react if I tried to invite myself back into his life. In all fairness, I thought he was well on his way to a big important degree and a big important job. I figured he'd be better off without me anyways."
"Will you be staying in the city?" Keralis asked. Ex glanced over at Xisuma before replying.
"For the near future, yes. I've got a friend I'll stay with until I can get my feet under me, and I think I'll stick around for a while. I suppose it's about time I put down some roots."
The Hermits exchanged glances. Keralis finally nodded and stood up, giving Ex and Xisuma a wide grin.
"How splendid! Well, Ex, on behalf of everyone, welcome to our lovely home. I'm going to go make breakfast."
And, well, that was that. It took a while longer for Ex to truly settle down in the city- and longer still for him to accept becoming an official Hermit- but to Xisuma, none of that mattered. He knew Ex was a Hermit from the first moment he stepped through the door.
Oh, and because he teamed up with Zed to cover the whole house in Silly String. That helped, too.
knox's zero waste solution........
