Flashback to the Rad Race Last WoMan standing at the Heidbergring:
This was my first Rad Race, I had heard rumors about it and was so keen on attending one of those events just to hang out with the cool kids. My teammate Henning and I arrived in Hamburg friday afternoon, went for burgers and waffles at Fränzi and on to a quick course check.
The next day, qualification wasn’t until late afternoon and we all hung out at our team’s info and food stand, drooling over the pretty sweet bikes that the fixed gear kids were riding.
I didn’t know what to expect from that event nor could I have anticipated where I stood amongst the other girls.
Quali approached and before I hopped on the rollers, I turned to Johanna Jahnke, vegan athlete and Why be normal? team rider, for advice which she kindly shared.
In quali, I tried to ride strategically and was able to make 4th.
Then 1,5h of waiting. Then rollers. Then the call for finals.
Right when they put those fashionable helmet covers on us, which, just to clear the air on that, I didn’t choose voluntarily, it started pouring cats and dogs on us. We all tried to get the optimal air pressure for a presumably slippery ride on feel but what the hell, it’s all good fun and who cares anyway…sort of.
We couldn’t see a thing, water sprayed back from the rider in front, from above, your own wheel and at times I thought people were just dumping water on us just to make things interesting.
After some rounds, I didn’t even realise how many more to go since I couldn’t see or hear anything, then I heard Ingo say my name in third. WTF? Somewhat blindsided by that fact and my impared vision, I went on to ride one round too many. But who cares, this was the first time I made the podium! (The podium I stuck a Ballern sticker on, the day before…)
What a fun event it was, the Rad Race guys know how to bring lovely people together who enjoy racing for the love of cycling. And before we all break down in tears as the emotions run high reminiscing the joy that those two wheels bring to the world, I wave good-bye. *burp*
