Heidelberg. I named this piece after Tyree Guyton’s magical art installation, and community art project, @heidelbergproj The animal covered telephone poles, which are pictured in the painting, are a part of that larger installation. I used to hang out at the Heidelberg project a lot while I was in college. I got to know the artists working there and they invited me on my first trip to the Packard plant, in search of a room in the basement that was rumored to hold enormous boxes full of ice skates and cowboy boots. They wanted them for an installation. A couple of weeks ago I snapped this picture at the Heidelberg Project. As I started to write an inspiration poem for this picture, I decided that the poem was going to be about what is happening in Michigan that have been really bugging me. 

The fact that The Nestle Corporation is trying to pay $200 for unlimited use of Michigan natural spring while 120 miles Flint, Mi still doesn’t have clean water. I have written a comment to legislation, I hope they do the right thing. 

This is how I have been feeling lately, I just want my land to thrive because then as people I believe we can thrive.

“Holy Place” Started in 1986 as part of Tyree Guyton’s mission to use art to uplift his neighborhood from violence, he incorporated found objects, the street, the trees, the sidewalks, abandoned houses, vacant lots, and nature to create what is now a world-renowned outdoor exhibition that has survived multiple mayoral attempts at removal and targeted arsons. This image is a detail of “Holy Place”, a structure built on the site of where once stood a house exhibit called “House of Soul” that was clad in vinyl records ~ until it was destroyed by arson in 2013. “Holy Place” includes elements rescued from the original installation. “You’re a Doll!” I had someone contact me and ask what #Detroit has to offer kids outside of taking them to a baseball game. I'm happy to say my response was a long list, and one of the things I included was the Heidleberg Project. The history is pretty cool, and I think the story is one that exemplifies Detroiters: The Heidelberg Project was started in 1986 by Tyree Guyton and his grandfather as a means to take their neighborhood back from criminals through art. They painted abandoned/vacant homes (still in practice in other areas of Detroit today) and used found objects to "decorate" the homes. The installation kept growing, and now takes up not only the whole street, it's stretched to neighboring streets, and other artists have contributed as well. Detroit is very much about art in all forms, fine arts, performing arts, and applied arts. I personally graduated from an art school based here, so am not surprised when I find so many talented people drawn to the city - how could they not be when surrounded by so much beauty and talent? The installation kept growing, and now takes up not only the whole street, it's stretched to neighboring streets, and other artists have contributed as well. I once heard it said that during an interview, Tyree was asked about all of the clocks spread all over the Heidelberg Project.
