"So... What'd I miss?"
//closed starter for @heiliger-jager
Mitch stepped into his old lab after what felt like years. In reality it was only a couple months. After a transfer to a badly infected kaiju blue zone he half expected the K lab to be in flames upon his return. He was met with no distinct changes, same old tape down the middle of the floor.
One side was immaculate as ever, mile high chalkboard with math equations and lab safety reminders.
The other side was another story. Blue guts laid out on a table, empty cans of energy drinks and cigarette butts littering the ground. The hypothetical breadcrumbs to a true artist's proverbial Hanzel and Gretel.
The true artist Mitch shared a space with. He was grateful the room wasn't split into threes when he first arrived.
As Mitch finishes scanning the room his eyes catch something, someone rather. G.
"Raiding Newt's snack drawer again?"
He calls to the girl, walking over to the designated lab hazard zone.
"Some things never change. You'd think he'd devise a kaiju proof lock to put on the damn thing."
He muses playfully, though inside he feels a creeping sense of guilt. His sudden transfer to the gulf had given him hardly enough time to pack, let alone say... Goodbye to everyone.
This knot in his throat created an awkward pause of sorts and he shifts from one foot to the other.
"So... Uh... What's been going on?"
He enphasizes the last part as if it's teenage lingo somehow. He cringed inwardly at himself, taking off his glasses and pinching the bridge of his nose.
Enough with the emotional constipation. He wraps his arms around G and hugs her in a tight embrace.
"I missed you, kiddo..."
