I love the idea of art thieves fic for the fourth wing characters.
Can you give us a teaser of each character and their skills and little bit of their background in the criminal art world.
Violet is the founder, leader, and #1 headache of the Iron “Crew.” She grew up all over as her mother traveled for work, especially all around Europe, until she was sent away to boarding school like all rich kids. Her mother is British, and her father is American. She’s always had a passion and talent for art from a young age—ever since she used to follow her museum curator father around—but her focus in college was initially on art history, rather than creation. In fact, she hasn’t created anything since before her father passed years ago, but that doesn’t mean she’s allowed her skills to dull. Violet’s specialty, besides having insane ideas, is forgeries and counterfeits. Her attention to detail makes her work rather infamous in particular circles, and most of her criminal knowledge comes from her favorite pastime: research. She’s a quick study, and she learned early on to make friends in low places to go along with all her friends in high ones.
Rhiannon is a pickpocket by trade, and a New York native. She has very quick hands, and she can lift anything off of anyone. When Violet found her, she was living in a teensy tiny apartment with none other than our boy, Ridoc, because they are childhood friends. He is good at computers and managed to get into a really good technical school, but not so good at the other stuff that comes with school. To sum up a long story, he ended up with half a degree, a ton of student debt, a roommate. But hey, at least Rhiannon took him with her after she started running with Violet. He’s not allowed out on the field much (mostly due to his general enthusiasm that isn’t conducive to undercover work) but he’s the man in the chair watching everyone’s back. It didn’t take long for all the crime to propel them both out of poverty, but they still make fun of Violet for being raised as a rich girl sometimes. Sawyer came later a bit later. He’s from California originally, with a strong background in mechanical engineering. In my mind, he enlisted in the military sort of aimless, came home after his injury still aimless. Violet definitely found him through recommendation, kidnapped invited him to visit her in New York when he made her a custom tool that she was very fond of, and then he never left. In addition to being the tinkerer of the group in charge of building things and making them better, he’s a hobby chemist… which is to say he has fun playing with explosives. Sawyer will both drive the runaway vehicle, which he customized himself, and create the bomb for the distraction. Rhiannon is usually on Sawyer duty, to make sure he doesn’t do some arson when nobody is looking.
To be clear, none of the three of them have any background in art at all. Violet is the lynchpin there, running off familial spite, years of formal education, and a lot of caffeine. They literally have no idea what the value of the things they are stealing are until they get their cuts. They all came into large amounts of cash in their early to mid-twenties and once they took care of family and important stuff, they did exactly what any young adult would do: spend their money on dumb shit. All of them have different vices, and there is a veto system in place for the more questionable purposes… like who do you think is the reason for the ban on exotic pets?
It’s really very fun! I have a little backlog of chapters and very little of it is Riorgail so far comparatively! They are very much running parallel instead of crossing paths in the beginning, so we get a ton of Iron Crew bonding. The marked ones appear, but definitely not to the same extent. I’ll save that lore.
