#Repost from @rebeccaskloot with The real #DeborahLacks holding the image of DNA from her mother's cells, given to her by Christoph Lengauer at Hopkins. He created this image using a technique he helped develop called Fluorescence In Situ Hybridization (FISH), which allows scientists to stain individual chromosomes within a cell to map the genes on them. So this image isn't a picture of Henrietta's cells, it is a picture of the genetic material within her cells. FISH, which is used for gene mapping, disease diagnosis and treatment, was developed using HeLa cells.
