"Even on the stillest nights you can hear the sea. Even if I didn't know it was there I would smell it. And I'd also know because of the way I feel when I'm close to it. Safe, somehow, no matter how wild it is. And free of all the things that trouble me, and even the ways in which I trouble myself..."
Just read The Greatcost by Helen Dunmore, which although advertised as 'a perfect ghost story', left me feeling quite disappointed by the ending. The premise is interesting and enough to buy and read to the end, in hope of a surprising twist, however no such shock is in store, only a slow and unmoving tale of a lonely wife and a 'ghost' in the form of an RAF pilot. Easy and short read but more could have been done with the characters and storyline.
