Helicoverpa zea, commonly known as the corn earworm, is a species (formerly in the genus Heliothis) in the family Noctuidae.[1] The larva of the moth Helicoverpa zea is a major agricultural pest. Since it is polyphagous (feeds on many different plants) during the larval stage, the species has been given many different common names, including the cotton bollworm and the tomato fruitworm. It also consumes a wide variety of other crops.[2] The species is widely distributed across the Americas with the exception of northern Canada and Alaska. It has become resistant to many pesticides, but can be controlled with integrated pest management techniques including deep ploughing, trap crops, chemical control using mineral oil, and biological controls. The species migrates seasonally, at night, and can be carried downwind up to 400 km. Pupae can make use of diapause to wait out adverse environmental conditions, especially at high latitudes and in drought. #3112 - Helicoverpa armigera conferta - Cotton Bollworm Moth
AKA Chloridea armigera, Chloridea obsoleta, Helicoverpa commoni and obsoleta Heliothis armigera, Heliothis conferta, Heliothis fusca, Heliothis pulverosa, Heliothis rama, Heliothis uniformis, Noctua armigera and Noctua barbara, corn earworm, Old World (African) bollworm, and scarce bordered straw in the UK, where the subspecies H. a armigera is an occasional vagrant.
Helicoverpa armigera armigera is native and widespread in central and southern Europe, temperate Asia and Africa, and recently Brazil - H. a. conferta is native to Australia and Oceania. Both subspecies are ruinous agricultural pests, with extremely wide diets, and have evolved resistance to many pesticides and genetically engineered crops.
The female can lay several hundred eggs, and under favourable conditions, the lifecycle can be complete in just over a month. As well as eating all those crops, the caterpillars are rather aggressive, occasionally carnivorous and may cannibalise each other.
Various places around Perth - we didn't see any on the Wongan Hills trip but no doubt they were around.
