Haha, yeah, I also cracked up at that, which is pretty much the only reason I answered it. Not sure if that person was coming from a “fuck you [presumed] cishets, the gays own Half Life now” perspective or if they actually think Barney is canonically gay and freehoun is canonically a thing (which is apparently common amongst newer fans who have never engaged with the source material directly), but either way... yikes.
I originally intended for Barney’s bisexuality in the fic in question to be a bit more plot-relevant, but I cut a lot of stuff for brevity and I’ve since lost enthusiasm to expand on those bits of backstory anywhere else because of the weird shipping climate in the fandom. Even the people who would’ve liked what I had in mind would’ve inevitably stripped it of all nuance and tried to use it as ship war ammo, and it’s hard to enjoy writing self-indulgent fic when you know that’s how it’ll be perceived. Oh well.
Also, this isn’t a dig at you, anon, but I feel compelled to point out: You can’t straight-wash a character who isn’t canonically (or strongly subtextually implied to be) not-straight. We know absolutely fuck-all about most of the HL characters’ sexual or romantic orientations, except that Alyx’s apparently includes dudes, Eli was married to a woman, and Barney’s might be into women, depending on how canon you think the Blue Shift manual is. All of this is open to interpretation.
Non-straight Barney fanon is great! I am 100% on board with it and have my own non-straight Barney headcanons! And freehoun is a great ship! But for chrissakes, people... there is not one single fucking shred of subtext in canon that any objective observer could interpret as “proof” of freehoun. There is nothing in canon to support your argument that people have to adhere to your sexuality headcanons in fanworks. Nothing. Zilch. Nada. I love Barney too much to write him as Excessively Straight out of pure spite, but the thought has officially crossed my mind. Good job, original shitty anon.
