When asked to come up with my favourite graphic designer at the moment, I was a bit stumped. Despite actually working as a graphic designer in the past, I actually have a very vague idea of what a graphic designer actually is.
Is graphic design work only done on computers?
Does it need to be commercial work?
Does there need to be typography involved?
I guess my pick for a favourite would depend on the answer to those questions, but I’ll go with the most recent one that ticks the most boxes...
Ethan Lee McCarthy (𝕳𝖊𝖑𝖑 𝕾𝖎𝖒𝖚𝖑𝖆𝖙𝖎𝖔𝖓)
Ethan Lee McCarthy is an artist and musician from Denver, Colorado. He is best known as one third of the doom/sludge metal band Primitive Man, however he is also a noted visual artist, graphic designer and activist. McCarthy creates dystopian imagery through the moniker Hell Simulation. He has made album artwork and layout for a number of bands throughout the years as well as poster and apparel designs.
McCarthy has recently veered away from what he refers to as “skulls and graves” to take a political stance with his work, using the format of wartime propaganda posters to comment on, among other things, police brutality, the Trump administration and the Black Lives Matter movement.
