Knife Party @ The Beekman Beach Club
This past Sunday the Beekman Beer Garden and Beach Club was host to the frenzied extravaganza that is Knife Party’s live performance. Supporting acts from Hellfire Machina, Sazon Booya, and Alex English filled the powder keg, readying the crowd of New Yorkers for EDM’s most explosive act. Alert was triggered to code red as former Pendulum members Rob Swire and Gareth McGrillen unleashed hardcore electro and filthy dubstep upon a packed crowd within a tent along the East River. Upon entering the tent, one was nearly tossed into a diverse sea of rave kids, bikini bimbos, hardcore moshers and ofcourse, the neon-clad college bros. Once inside the tent, it was nearly impossible to breathe while attempting to remain safe from encroaching mosh pits. Although the crowd was rowdy and aggressive, there was a sustained camaraderie among fans; even those who turned out bloody and blue, bled with a smile on their face.
The heated turnout was as predictable as the DJ set, the duo dropped the popular tracks off their first EP to reinforce their name, a slew of Skrillex tunes to please the crowd and the beats off of their latest, Rage Valley, to promote their new release. While the experience was what is expected of a Knife Party performance, it does not diminish the integrity of their artistry and ability to captivate a crowd. With a style that can be considered what Skrillex’s older brothers would sound like, Swire and McGrillen’s production has worked to fuel the metal/punk side of dubstep and popularize a mid-range heavy style some call complextro.
While songs like “Fire Hive,” “Destroy them with Lazers” and “Internet Friends” are best heard live alongside an energetic crowd, the Beekman lacked a soundsystem powerful enough to do it justice. The music was pushed through ornate speakers and seemed to bleed outside of the massive waterfront tent that held the show.
(Cool, but impractical)
This problem may have been avoided had the show been at the venue it was intended to be prior to rescheduling. The Brooklyn Terminal Project, which boasts a 75,000 square foot complex, and “killer soundsystem to experience your favorite DJ’s,” was to host the event last Sunday as their grand opening, yet undisclosed difficulties caused a transfer to the Beekman.
Nonetheless, the Beekman got the job done, and the backyard was a pleasant escape from the madness inside the tent. Its chic atmosphere, sandy floors, and view of the Brooklyn bridge gifted one with a breath of fresh air in the most literal and aesthetic way possible.
