Something about the pair of red, unblinking eyes boring into him vexed Mantis.

He had little to no experience dealing with civilians, much less children. Eli was the only other kid he had ever significantly interacted with back in his childhood-- and any of the others he may have seen were all soldiers of sorts, children of war. When it came to finding work in his later years, he tended to avoid the factions that utilized child soldiers out of... simplicity’s sake.

The kid before him didn’t seem like much of a soldier, regardless of the tenacious grip on the knife in their hands. Mantis met their unwavering gaze, shifting in his seat to rest a hand under his chin. His mask hissed with every exhale, the only audible noise either party made for what felt like an eternity. When the staring contest yielded no perceptible results, Mantis leaned back again and addressed the silent little ghost, hands folding neatly on his lap.

“... Can I help you.”

As a child, they read the same stories over and over again, dozens of times. They wanted to relive the ups and downs, living on the joy of the heroes. Thinking of that now left a twist in their stomach. Now they knew better, now they knew that type of behaviour was toxic. However, it was their very nature and could not be escaped easy.

“I did like it when you read to me, though. I thought you were really cool and funny. I didn’t really know you were anything but my mental narration at first, but... When I figured it out, I thought you were the first friend I made in the underground and I was really happy to have you looking out for me.”
