HELLO SCREEN - THE MAKING OF A WEBSITE
HOW DID THIS START
As I was trying to fit myself in the space of the lens while taking picture that later became ‘Contain’ (a photo book) I realised that it was interesting to see one’s interaction with the ‘virtual’ / non existent space of the photo frame which also takes places through physical actions. My own struggle to understand the boarder to witch I had to contain myself acquired physical strive applying haptic participation to this experience with the end goal being to fit within it. Also the result is quite funny and playful as I was concentrating so much to get this right that I was getting very strange facial expressions. Â
OPENING UP THE PROCESS
So I decided to ask people to do their own, or needing models for the  contain book was more of the start. But as people did not have access to the image I was seeing through the viewfinder, I had to blow that up, so I discovered I could connect the camera straight to the projector. as a result, the people that were taking part could see their motion on the wall and have a clearer idea of what they are doing. I also decided on different tasks that people had to perform as to feel this interaction within the boarder of a frame. Some of them being
1. Contain all of yourself within the boarder of a frame.Â
2. try touching all 4 corners at the same time
3. Try outlining the boarder.
4. Try to fill the frame with your body
5. How many people can you fit in the frame
People responded better to some than others. So I experimented with different ones and kept 3 in order to make this simple. Collecting the material has been fun, as I get to laugh a lot with people’s reactions.Â
The next step for opening up my process even more is to make this an available participatory thing to all. By using a webcam I could ask people to make their own submissions for wherever they are without me needed there to set up and submit the videos online.Â
AND THEN WHAT - CURATION OF MATERIAL/ACCESSIBILITY/ APPLICATION
So if I want want people to submit their own videos online, then the most accessible format is a website. Which could include a gallery and a part which ‘submit your own’. The website itself needs to have a visual language that follows the idea of the project. Which means I have to deal with software that I have no idea of as this is the first time that I am working in such media.Â
Ideally, Â I would want
1. Videos of the completed tasks by different people playing in a showreel.
2. A random generator that would generate the order of the videos.Â
3. A ‘submit you own’ page which allows people to enter their own videos in the showreel
4. Maybe the videos of each task tiled together and executing simultaneously (could be also on the submit your own page)
So I started today trying to tick off the things on my list as that will be the only way I am measuring how successful this is. I started off by playing with Adobe Muse today. Its going to be quite long but I will get the hang of it at some point. I realised that I needed to reshoot all of my videos as they were in the wrong format, and it would be never been showed the way I wanted.Â
