HELLO SCREEN - THE MAKING OF A WEBSITE
HOW DID THIS START
As I was trying to fit myself in the space of the lens while taking picture that later became ‘Contain’ (a photo book) I realised that it was interesting to see one’s interaction with the ‘virtual’ / non existent space of the photo frame which also takes places through physical actions. My own struggle to understand the boarder to witch I had to contain myself acquired physical strive applying haptic participation to this experience with the end goal being to fit within it. Also the result is quite funny and playful as I was concentrating so much to get this right that I was getting very strange facial expressions.
OPENING UP THE PROCESS
So I decided to ask people to do their own, or needing models for the contain book was more of the start. But as people did not have access to the image I was seeing through the viewfinder, I had to blow that up, so I discovered I could connect the camera straight to the projector. as a result, the people that were taking part could see their motion on the wall and have a clearer idea of what they are doing. I also decided on different tasks that people had to perform as to feel this interaction within the boarder of a frame. Some of them being
1. Contain all of yourself within the boarder of a frame.
2. try touching all 4 corners at the same time
3. Try outlining the boarder.
4. Try to fill the frame with your body
5. How many people can you fit in the frame
People responded better to some than others. So I experimented with different ones and kept 3 in order to make this simple. Collecting the material has been fun, as I get to laugh a lot with people’s reactions.
The next step for opening up my process even more is to make this an available participatory thing to all. By using a webcam I could ask people to make their own submissions for wherever they are without me needed there to set up and submit the videos online.
AND THEN WHAT - CURATION OF MATERIAL/ACCESSIBILITY/ APPLICATION
So if I want want people to submit their own videos online, then the most accessible format is a website. Which could include a gallery and a part which ‘submit your own’. The website itself needs to have a visual language that follows the idea of the project. Which means I have to deal with software that I have no idea of as this is the first time that I am working in such media.
Ideally, I would want
1. Videos of the completed tasks by different people playing in a showreel.
2. A random generator that would generate the order of the videos.
3. A ‘submit you own’ page which allows people to enter their own videos in the showreel
4. Maybe the videos of each task tiled together and executing simultaneously (could be also on the submit your own page)
So I started today trying to tick off the things on my list as that will be the only way I am measuring how successful this is. I started off by playing with Adobe Muse today. Its going to be quite long but I will get the hang of it at some point. I realised that I needed to reshoot all of my videos as they were in the wrong format, and it would be never been showed the way I wanted.

I filmed a friend while he conducted the same task on a different virtual, if virtual can be defined as being such in power, force, or effect, though not actually or expressly such. I have also done in the past a few other experiments of treating reflections of light as spaces to interact with, so maybe this is a sort of continuation.
So, my frame is ready and its time to mock it on the wall. The first image is where the frame needs to fit, and the second is the frame fitted in. There are some mistakes in my measurement as it does not fit perfectly, however, i am quite satisfied from how it came out.
I also tried taking a picture through a lens, through a lens, through a lens, with not much success.
To show my slideshow projection, I decided I want to hide it behind a wall with only 2 cm showing. So I decided to make a little hole, so the video can be viewed through. At first I was going for a flat cut, but then I decided that maybe a more sculptural approach where the frame will be beveled innards so that it attracts more attention to the image. Now I am correcting the video to that size. The frame will become part of the wall and will be painted the same colour.
Feldenkrais exercises for body awareness. I was researching feldenkrais as a method of natural movement in relation to the body. The exercises and tasks given have usually certain, small limitations that sound very simple however are quite hard to execute as they take a lot of concentration and understanding of the deconstructing of simple motion that we do not consider on our day to day.
A mind map of what is going through my head right now alongside a few timelines of comparing people’s responses to different tasks of the live stream participatory videos.
I was also experimenting with filming through different lenses. here, through a polaroid..
As my previous experimentation only included a single person that was aware of the video and the separation of the two spaces, I thought it would be reasonable to experiment with the same idea in an everyday environment with unaware participants. I chose the university entrance as its a busy place with a bit of a slope, so I could get people moving throughout. I like how people move through the space going bigger and smaller, or separating in half.
As I have also been paying attention to the bleeds that take place accidentally when trying to take a picture through another camera, I decided to experiment with the same idea but this time through moving image. The result is quite intriguing as images move across the boarders of the two separate spaces. Visually, it also communicates that more than one space exist all the time, which interact and inter-relate. i need to experiment more to understand what I am doing.
At first these images were meant to be part of a book. However, I decided at some point that maybe they would look good as an analogue slideshow as there would be no boarder to the surrounding black space which would make even stronger the existence of a space inside or behind that. Through a series of experiments that did not work, as the images are really small and the projector does not have that good a resolution. So, I decided to mock up an analogue slideshow projection digitally. I used the sound of a traditional projector and that also dictated the pace of my video. In addition, as now everything was digital, I decided to juxtapose the still images with a few moving clips that I had with people trying to fit within that space. The result is that the viewer does not realise they are moving from the start, however when he does, he expects movement form all of the images on screen. Also, due to its minuscule size, the viewer is not quite sure that they are moving anyways. I was hoping to show the video at the format of a viewfinder that being 2cm x 1.5cm. To achieve such, I am finding a flat screen and then cutting a small hole out of a wooden surface that will then cover the rest of the screen and just expose the part I want. After testing all sorts of projectors and screens, I realised a screen has much better image quality, and as the format is so small, the detail is needed for the viewer to understand what he is looking at. Hopefully, the sound will be enough to attract ones attention to the looped video.
