okay guys, this is my huge apology for not keeping my words to myself. I've said many times that I'm going to start writing fanfiction, but no

yes, I'm thinking of taking part in the kinktober, and most likely I'll write all sorts of obscenities, I just don't have the energy to write ordinary fanfiction at all.

it gets almost no impact, so I feel like I'm doing it for nothing. I'll really start, but not now. I'm just waiting for the right time, and I'm also waiting for december for FNAF2 to be released. please 🙏

As soon as Dean finishes his sentence—no, his declaration, he wants to clear his throat. He settles for swallowing while Cas stares at him, a mixture of curious and questioning, brow furrowed, cheeks pink. For a second, Dean pictures making good on his promise right here, or somewhere close by, pressing their lips together, unbuttoning that starched white shirt and pulling out the knot on that tie, tonguing his way up Cas’s neck, unexplored territory—

But instead he drags Cas to a strip club for an ill-fated attempt at a tryst that almost immediately goes sideways. Standing in the hallway, women glaring at them, he sees Cas cast in neon lights, collarbone exposed and tie askew, and wishes he’d made good on his imaginings.

(Nevertheless, it’s still one of the best nights he’s had in a long, long time.)

(But also, weirdly–Mme. Thénardier isn’t wrong. Cosette and her daughters are playing some zero-sum game with fate. There’s no causal mechanism in the plot by which Cosette’s rise causes Éponine’s fall, but metaphysically, she’s stolen all of Éponine’s good fortune and Éponine, at least, is aware of it.)

This made me realize that there really is  a causal mechanism, though!  

That is, there is a direct, causal relationship between Cosette’s suffering and Eponine’s prosperity and comfort. Which is that from the moment Cosette is left with them , the Thenardiers are maintaining their  comfort by exploiting Fantine and Cosette. Fantine’s being overcharged for Cosette from the start, with Thenardier calculating it exactly to pay his debts. Cosette’s clothes are sold away, to pay the Thenardier’s debts. Eponine is given the skirt that Fantine sends to Cosette, the skirt Fantine sold her hair to buy. Cosette’s rise in the world matches the Thenardier family’s descent , but it’s not because she’s (even metaphorically!) stealing anything from them--it’s because their “good fortune”  is built on genuinely stealing from Fantine and Cosette,  built  directly on being able to exploit Fantine and Cosette, in a very real and material way.   When the Thenadiers lose that source of “income” , they start slipping. 

And that doesn’t change the narrative/mythic feel of Cosette and Eponine switching places! But it does mean Mme T isn’t “right”.  Because the thing is, if the Thenardiers had treated Cosette well? If they hadn’t overcharged Fantine? they would have benefited more.

They depend on Fantine’s money--but they exploit her to the point of death ( poor horse!). That seals that off.  But --I admit I’m going into speculation here!-- but I think they also lose out from a greater prosperity bc of Cosette. Because I’m like 90 percent sure that Valjean wasn’t  sure he was going to become Cosette’s principal guardian when he went to Montfermeil.  If he’d been fully convinced of how awful the Thenardiers were, he could have just picked Cosette up in the wood and been on his way.  Instead he goes and studies the Thenardiers, and only after having Cosette’s abuse confirmed does he move to “pay off” her “debt”. 

Again, I realize I’m hypothesizing, but this makes sense! Valjean is a known criminal at this point; he’s only able to travel as freely as he does because he’s more or less believed dead. He can’t offer Cosette a secure life in society. He adopts her because there is no one else; but if there had  been, if there had been loving foster parents, everything we see about JVJ suggests he would have upheld his promise to Fantine by leaving money to support Cosette and then removing himself from “respectable”, happy society . 

If I’m right about this , it means the Thenardiers , by financially abusing Fantine and Cosette , instead of supporting them and treating them fairly,lose out on 600,000 francs. That’s  Cosette’s good fortune, Valjean’s investment in her, and they could have shared in it. It’s not stolen from them at all; rather, it’s entirely lost by them because  of the mindset Mme T has , that Cosette is Other and must be minimized  and abused , because of Thenardier’s short-sighted policies of absolute, extractive exploitation without competent management or effort on his end. 

On a metaphorical level, of course, this is about how exploitation is ultimately unsustainable, not just cruel but impractical and self-defeating over time and NIII is a bad financial manager and ultimately will lose France when the people realize the abuse he’s putting her through ; on a purely character level, this isn’t so much any kind of Narrative Justice (Thenadier lives to exploit people on a much grander and more horrific scale, TANJ) as a logical consequence of a bad plan based on a bad theory. Mme T is  wrong, not just morally but practically. It isn’t  a zero-sum game, or at least it shouldn’t have been.    Cosette’s a benefit to the Thenardiers, the source of their security, and in abusing her they undermine their own success,
