"You're a bastard, aren't you? Then you should be fun to play with." A confident, easy smile to match the tone: playful, challenging, almost flirtatious—and it always was—while the devil in man's flesh watched on in half-lidded interest, unafraid of sticking his hand in the proverbial fire. // Sylus for Nastka, unfortunately skjghasfgsd
Nastka did not so much hear the word as allow it to settle within him, descending in slow motion, like pale ash surrendering itself to still air, drifting until it found something ancient and unguarded beneath his ribs.
And then something in him broke open with laughter.
It was not polished. Not measured. Not the kind of sound he offered the world when he wished to remain untouched. This was deeper, unrefined, pulled from somewhere he usually kept locked away. It rose through him like something long restrained, finally remembering how to breathe, filling the space between them with a warmth that felt almost wrong in its ease. Even Nastka, for the briefest flicker of a moment, seemed aware of it as it escaped him, as though he had not entirely approved its existence.
And that was what unsettled him most.
When it finally faded, it did not leave him empty. It left him altered. A faint curve remained at his mouth, something between amusement and warning, something that suggested he had not yet decided what this moment meant.
“Bastard…” Nastka echoed softly, as though turning the word over in his mind rather than speaking it aloud, testing its texture, weighing its shape.
His gaze lifted with deliberate slowness until it found Sylus again and held there without hesitation. There was no insult taken, no pride wounded. Only a quiet awareness sharpening behind his eyes, something observant, almost intrigued.
Not enough to overwhelm, but enough to be undeniable.
“In my culture,” he began, voice lowered into something rich and controlled, each word chosen with precision, “that word belongs to a child born outside of vows, to something careless, unclaimed.”
A pause settled between his sentences, heavy but measured.
His thoughts flickered briefly inward. Careless. Unclaimed. The words did not fit him, yet they lingered anyway, brushing against memories he rarely allowed to surface. His expression did not change, but something inside him tightened at the edges.
“But when I think of my parents…” he continued, softer now, though still deliberate, “there was nothing careless about them. Nothing unfinished.”
Another breath passed through him, slow and dismissive, as though he were setting the idea down and walking away from it.
“So no,” he murmured, head tilting slightly, the motion unhurried and precise, “that name does not quite fit me.”
The air between them felt denser now, not with movement but with attention. Something unspoken stretched itself thin across the space, delicate and dangerous at once, like a thread waiting to decide whether it would hold or snap.
Nastka studied Sylus in that silence. Not just his face, but the way he stood in it, the way he occupied distance as though it were a choice rather than a necessity. There was something about him that pulled Nastka forward without permission, something that made observation feel less like analysis and more like risk.
His hand rose slowly, stopping just short of contact. It lingered there, suspended in uncertainty, close enough that its absence became its own kind of touch.
“But…” Nastka added quietly, voice dipping into something more intimate, more deliberate, “I do like the way you said it.”
A faint smile returned, controlled and subtle, carrying no warmth, only intent.
“As if you were testing it,” he continued, eyes never leaving Sylus, “rolling it around just to see whether it would cut… or melt.”
He noticed how carefully Sylus spoke, or perhaps how carefully he made others feel as though they were being seen. That awareness unsettled Nastka in a way he did not fully admit to himself. It was not fear. It was recognition of something that could not be easily steered.
Another small step forward, quiet and inevitable.
“And I wonder…” he murmured, the words almost not leaving his mouth so much as brushing against the air between them, “which you were hoping for.”
Silence followed, but it was not empty. It pressed in gently, insistently, as though waiting for permission to continue existing.
“You’re not wrong, though.”
His smile deepened slightly, though it never softened.
“I am very fun to play with.”
A beat lingered, stretched thin enough to feel like anticipation itself.
And then, lower, more deliberate, carrying something edged beneath its elegance:
“Just don’t confuse my laughter for surrender…”
His gaze sharpened, something colder threading through the calm, as though the amusement had always been sitting on top of something far less forgiving.
“…or you might find you’ve stepped into something that doesn’t play at all.”
In that moment, Nastka understood something unspoken about Sylus. Not everything, not even close, but enough to feel the outline of a game forming between them. And worse, he could not decide whether he wanted to win it or see how far it could bend before it broke. // @hellgloom
