Whenever facebook normies do politics, their opinions tend to be a cornucopia of small individual nightmares. We’ve already pretty much established that the average person is much dumber than you think. The next step is to understand that the average person has even worse political opinions than you think and develops them in even more flawed and idiotic ways than you could dream of. Even though I’m quite cynical, I sometimes forget and need to remind myself.
The current example is of random contacts I have on Facebook raging against LGBT, specifically gay marriage, even more specifically, a referendum to redefine marriage as between a man and a woman in the constitution.
The modus operandi is to find the most ridiculous looking picture you can get of a gay parade, preferably with some masculine looking person crossdressing badly and some other person dressed in a flamboyant and tacky way then scream really loudly “DO YOU WANT THESE DEGENERATES TO MAKE OUR LAWS?”
This is not hypothetical, this is an actual post. This is how a large portion of Romanians think. This is how my mother thinks. Their logic is rooted in a deep hatred of LGBT people as being degenerates. They will paint some grand narrative of the left trying to destroy Christian values and have emotions of genuine rage against it. Just a lot of vocalizing outrage against how evil defectors are undermining the bedrock of their civilization. And to me it always sounds like the guttural emanations of a dying swamp creature.
I don’t want to jump to the conclusion that low intelligence leads to people more easily forming bigoted opinions, but gosh, it sure feels that way.
This is probably the main reason I’m libertarian. Because I feel like no common ground can be reached with these people, not for a few decades at least. Nobody should be condemned to live in societies that are fundamentally hostile to them.
This is why I value voluntary association and freedom of movement so highly. The idea that you could take that to the max and apply it all the way down to just the individual and have property rights take care of the rest and people who like each other will tend to move to each other like some sort of magnificent and unholy social fluid and we’ll suddenly be more harmonious because we’re divided along lines of real political likeness instead of random weak genetic likeness. It’s all unlikely, but it’s a nice dream. Far away. So for now, just let me fucking immigrate and I’ll stay away from your welfare services and pay my taxes.
Edit: One of the comments I read on that facebook thread was someone saying that “We don’t want children raised incubators or some other way!”. That’s a person who is going to be voting on the referendum.
