Sunset, Helms Bakery, Culver City. This September marks my 30th year of having a studio in the Helms Building. Built in 1930, it baked the bread for the '32 Olympics and the Apollo 11 moon landing before closing its doors. It's founder, Paul Hoy Helms, was the nephew of famed 19th century baseball player Dummy Hoy, whose deafness caused the hand signs such as safe and out used in baseball to this day.
