Francis Greenburger: We finalized the plans and approval for what the Chicago Tribune described as "the tallest tower in the iconic row of skyscrapers on South Michigan Avenue . . . [and] the tallest Jahn-designed building in Chicago, where the architect is based." I was in Nicaragua for Christmas, because my youngest daughter, Claire, is an avid surfer. I was showing everyone pictures of 1000M to see what they thought when Claire's childhood friend Myrto, vacationing with us, said 'It looks like it's going to fall over.' 'What?' 'The top is bigger than the bottom, so it looks like it's going to topple over.' For the next few days I reflected on Nikki's comment until I realized she was right - and that nobody was going to buy an apartment in a building that looked like it was about to fall over. On all levels, you want to be secure in your home. I picked up the phone and called Helmut. 'You're going to kill me,' I said. 'You have to go back to the drawing board.' Helmut Jahn: I was skiing in Utah with some friends when Francis called to tell me that he couldn't sell apartments in a building that appears to be falling.

Two of my favorite weird modern buildings: the Helmut Jahn former State of Illinois / now Google building, and, to the east, Bertrand Goldberg's Marina Towers.
