“Explain it to me again -- why do we need to pretend to be married?”
Asra asks the question with a good-natured smile, the way he asks every question. It makes it hard to be irritated that she has to explain the whole thing again (only to be told “Nadi, that doesn’t seem all that necessary. Are you sure you don’t just want an excuse to hang on to my arm?” with a wink that is equal parts goofy and charming). So she does anyway.
“We need to pretend to be married,” Nadia says slowly, “because the courtiers have been pestering me for months about finding an appropriate match now that this business with Lucio is resolved. I won’t look at any of the matches they’ve made for me -- I refuse. So hopefully seeing me married to an absentminded magician will send the message they need to hear.”
Asra nods thoughtfully at that, and smiles at a couple walking briskly past them towards the palace ballroom. “Hmm... I guess that makes sense enough. I certainly can’t say no to free fine wine and food, right? But...” The serious look on his face is so disconcerting that Nadia very nearly trips over the skirt of her own dress, but she is if nothing else a professional and so she manages to catch herself in time.
The sight of him kneeling at her feet, his lips pressing ticklishly gently against her knuckles, however, nearly throws her all over again.
“If we’re married,” he says, letting his words take shape against the skin of her hand, “does that mean I get to kiss you in public now?” He grins. “If I’m going to play the part of doting spouse.”
Nadia recovers, and with a roll of her eyes drags the magician to his feet. “You’re ridiculous,” she snorts, and pulls him onwards.
“Is that a no?”
“... No. It isn’t a no.”
