Inflammation is the immune system's natural response to injury, infection, or foreign chemicals. It is essential for healing because it removes waste, prevents infection, and delivers nutrients and oxygen to the wounded area. While inflammation is required for healing, persistent inflammation can stymie the healing process and contribute to a variety of health problems such as heart disease, cancer, and autoimmune disorders.
Inflammation is classified into two types: chronic and acute. Acute inflammation is a rapid response to injury or illness that is required for healing. It attracts white blood cells and other immune cells to the site of injury while increasing blood flow to supply nutrients and oxygen. Chronic inflammation, on the other hand, is a long-term response that can injure healthy tissue and cause it to heal slowly.
The inflammatory response mechanism includes the release of cytokines, which draw white blood cells to the wounded location. Prostaglandins stimulate blood flow and produce sensations such as redness, swelling, and pain.
Regardless of the unpleasant sensations, inflammation is necessary for healing. It eliminates damaged tissue, prevents infection, and stimulates new tissue growth.
However, chronic inflammation can cause a variety of ailments. Arthritis causes joint inflammation, which leads to pain, stiffness, and edema. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease that affects the joints, producing chronic inflammation and deformity.
