She rubbed at her eyes, trying to pin her thoughts back into order—too many voices, too many little details refusing to stay still, seeing dark figures in the corners of her office. Her pen slipped from her fingers, rolled off the desk, hit the floor with a sound that felt too loud.

She pressed her palms against the wood, focused on the grain, the weight, the realness of it. Breathe. Anchor. Keep the world where it is.

A soft knock broke the silence. The door creaked open, and someone stepped in—quiet, but not quiet enough. She startled, sharp inhale, shoulders tensing before she looked up.

“oh… hey…” She murmured, her own voice ringing in her ears along with all the others. She fought back the urge to yell at them to get out and/or sob on the spot.
