Surfaces have meanings fixed by tradition.

The author is saying that this is an impersonal way of looking at aesthetics because the meaning of authenticity comes from within and includes other factors like experience and how people identify themselves. I would love to discuss this because I'm really dumb and I'd like to know how this relates to cultural appropriation if aesthetic meaning and authenticity are personal things.
