perhaps it was the fact that she was a public servant, the need to help and assistant and do the right thing had been instilled in her even since before her days at quantico for training. perhaps it was just the face of a young woman looking a little unsure, that compelled her to approach. "excuse me?" she asked, softening her own expression from one that could, on occasion, be quite harsh. "are you okay? you look like you might be lost, do you need some help?"

The rope was digging into her wrists, painting sore lines on her skin. Samantha inhaled sharply, and the smell of blood and dry grass filled her nose. It was an earthy, metallic scent that seemed to permeate everything around here -even the old quilted sheets and the woven carpet.

"And what is it hungry for?" she asked -to make conversation, to stall, to figure out what the fuck was wrong with these people. Cultists, the lot of it. That much she knew. It was infuriating how easily she had walked into the belly of the beast. But Samantha was an optimist. She'd escape, even if she had to claw her way out.

Olive jolted. The milk spilled, splattering her skin. She put the glass down on the table. Drip, drip, drip. The milk rolled down her fingers to fall and hit the old kitchen tiles. "Sorry- I just... I couldn't sleep," she sputtered awkwardly, trying to settle the beating of her heart.

They're not keeping me here, thought Olive, but even as she thought the words, they tasted like ash in her mouth. She grabbed the glass again to try and wash the taste with milk. All it did was make her queasy.
