New Years Missed Calls

Shazad: Hey, Folami. I was calling because I just heard that you weren't in town for winter celebrations, and I wanted to let you know that you're always welcome at the Abdallah household. Your sisters, myself and my wife invite you any time that you and your mom can't seem to get on the same footing about things.

Saaliha: Hey. Sooooo... I accidentally told Daddy that Momma told you to stay in Oregon. I thought you and him had patched things up and that he knew how she is about her new family and your quirks! I know he's not your "father" or whatever, but come on... he's your dad as much as mine. Happy New Year. Call me. YOU ARE my sister. LEGIT my sister. No shared custody. Not in theory. We have the same biological mother. I just didn't choose her when she left daddy... Sorry that you didn't get to have that choice. Can you call me? This is my first trip home since I went to college. I had stuff to talk to you about.

Fatima: I'm receiving vitriol in regards to my kindhearted suggestion that you not stress yourself out by trying to make it to Austin for the holidays. I don't appreciate the allegations and this is not the type of energy that I wanted brought into our family with the new year, Folami. Call your ex-step and your sisters and straighten that out, before the sun goes down on this grim misinformation.

Fatima: I take it you're still sleeping in. Either you spent time partying with all of your... childhood friends, or you're ignoring me. Make those calls, please. It looks like you're avoiding us until you gather yourself, which makes me appear guilty.

Fatima: Happy New Year's Day. Were you waiting on that. The calls, Folami. This level of difficulty and pettiness is why I suggested you stay home in the first place.

Holiday Season?

I am cold and I have sniffles.  No money, but gratefully a little for a good Christmas meal.  I don’t have a vehicle, but certainly have a lot of heart and desire to go some place.  I am still not trying to be inside through all of the holiday.  Festivities, please.

Dorm Deliberation

Tagging: Folami Adebowale Location: Shasta Place Dormitory Time Frame: 12-23-16, Evening General Notes:  You don’t have to come home for Christmas.

It wasn’t like she needed to, anyway.  Living by the law was not cheap or easy.  The flight alone was more than she could even probably scrounge up.  But, the fact that she not only wasn’t asked to come home, but pretty much asked not to, was the kick in the gut.  

You don’t have to come home for Christmas. 

And what was she supposed to do?  Find some random Oregon family to take her in?  Chill in the dorm and hang a mistletoe to kiss herself?  Was anybody that she knew sticking around campus that she could crash around and mooch holiday food?  What was going on in the city?

You don’t have to come home for Christmas.

Not surprising.  Last visit was not very well.  But, they had not been well for a while.  For some reason, she thought that it might be different.  Or maybe, she was simply really hungry, cold and lonely and wanted to feel human again.  Family always helped that.  They always reminded her, with their normalcy and blandness that even though she was destined for greatness; she came from humanity.  Her roots were in its loins.  She was weaned on its bosom.  She would be embraced by its dirt someday.

But seriously?  What kind of thing was that to say to your daughter?  

She didn’t really know anyone around campus, or in the city.  Good things for holiday jobs, because she probably wouldn’t have eaten without one.  She checked her phone to see if she could find some upcoming nearby events.  Back home, she could simply go outside and head to 6th street or nearly anywhere downtown, or go to the South side of the city and just run into activities.  She wasn’t sure if this place was like that.  She hadn’t had much time to explore it.

Can’t hurt.
