Shocking betrayal of the century.
I'm a history major and a religion minor and I 100% feel you on the need for positive Islam news to be shown in the media. Literally everyone argues with me regarding Islam or eastern religions (or even about my specific study in history) and they literally have no idea what they're talking about and have ZERO respect for other cultures and it's infuriating all the time. I live in a southern United States, very diverse, poor city, but there are still bigots hanging around...
Yes! I understand this so much. I hope you don’t mind if I answer this publicly? I kind of want to show people I’m not alone…
In the fall, I took a class called Islam in the Modern World and, of course, over winter break, everyone’s stock question is, “So what classes have you been taking?” and I would tell them and then just literally brace myself for them to start talking about terrorism. Because idk how much time we even spent talking about terrorism to be honest. It has so little to do with modern Islam because there are literally over a million other Muslims who are not terrorists who have lived experiences with their religion that are much more common and relevant to study. (I also took a class in Hinduism the next semester, which didn’t have quite as bad a reaction, but I find that “the West’s” relationship with Hinduism can be weird and appropriative and exotify-ing so maybe that’s why?)
It’s really depressing to have to sit there and listen to people spout off bad things about Islam when they didn’t even research it. I wish there were more people interested in studying religion. The people who think it’s useless make me laugh. They have no idea.
