a little note on fanfiction ‘etiquette’ for readers!
first of all i wanna be clear that this is not supposed to be a ‘callout’ post by any means!! this is just me rambling and maybe offering some food for thought about something i’ve been noticing as a writer across both platforms (tumblr, archive of our own, etc.) and fandoms. some readers out there seem to keep their feedback on writing limited to asking for more, whether that be another chapter, a part 2, or whatever.
now, i’m sure a lot of you don’t mean this in a rude way. if anything, it’s a compliment that you enjoyed the writing so much that you want to read more of it, and, to be fair, i personally really love any & all engagement with my work, so i don’t want this to come across as me complaining about that. however, i’ve noticed an increase in people only asking for more without leaving any other sort of feedback, which is why i’m mostly addressing readers here. with how many incredibly talented & amazing writers are sharing their work on the internet, i think it’s easy to forget that most of us are doing this in our free time and, more importantly, just for fun. i also understand that this probably isn’t always at the forefront of people’s minds, and that asking for more content rarely comes from a place of bad intentions.
but this is just your little reminder that, while asking authors for updates/another chapter or a part 2 is completely valid and probably (hopefully??) meant as a compliment, it’s also really nice to hear what you actually enjoyed about our fics. hearing what resonated with you, for example, or what stood out to you can mean a whole lot more than repeatedly being asked for more: we are not paid to provide content, obviously, and for most of us, genuine feedback is far more motivating than a ‘when are we getting a part two of x y z.’
and in case you need a few examples of what you could tell your favorite authors instead of only asking for a part 2, here you go:
‘i really like the way you wrote x.’
‘i really like the characterization of y.’
‘i like the ending/any other scene because z.’
‘i liked the dynamic between character a & character b because.…’
talk about your favorite detail/scene in a fic.
point out a specific line that stood out to you & say what you liked about it.
tell us your thoughts while reading or…
…your theories on where it could go from there. (personally, i find it really fun when people share their theories/pick up on clues throughout a fic).
or, alternatively, keep it as simple as ‘i really enjoyed this fic, thank you for sharing,’ or ‘i had so much fun reading this.’
→ really important side note that this is not about my personal experience as a writer on here!! the anons in my inbox are usually really really sweet, and i’ve gotten so lucky with my readers, so i’m not asking you guys to change a thing. this is more about comments & messages i’ve seen across different fandoms and websites.
