Insight into the Work of a Henna Artist
Just imagine waking up late morning from a deep sleep, having a stretch and feeling the tension in your lower back. Turning your head to one side feels like the weight of a watermelon. You become conscious of how late last night got, from the constant excitement and loud music. The social anxiety of all the new faces make you slouch and curl more. It’s either new to you, or it’s a daily scene.
Now, all of this is happening while you are trying to give your absolute concentration to a soon to be masterpiece, a one of a kind. Ah, not another nudge from someone walking past, now I need to fix that. Did the music just get louder? My eyes are hurting from the strain of focusing, now my ears are going to start crying any second. I smell pizza, I feel hungry, but I’m not going to eat that, because then slouching forward will become extremely uncomfortable. Not long left now, in two hours I should be done! Why is that women staring at me? I’m noticing her piercing eyes from the corner of my eyes, I think she’s walking towards me.
The henna used by the artist is made of natural ingredients and is generally safe for use on the skin.

“How BEAUTIFUL! Are you not going to do a little more on her? She is the Bride after all. Listen Darling, it better come out dark okay, give me guarantee it will be super dark.” The constant comments push through the bass of the bhangra. I release a sigh. It feels good.
I wonder if she likes what I’m doing so far, she hasn’t said much, but that’s fair because she must be filled to the rim with nerves. This shooting pain is getting really uncomfortable on my lower back, just smile through it.
Suddenly the pain disappears, the strain in my eyes relieved and the sound of music and of those around me evaporated. I have entered a state of flow and it’s just me and the mehndi. Several hours later, which felt like ten minutes, I look up from my design to meet the eyes of the bride and see the excitement in her. In that moment I know she loves it. My masterpiece that will begin to fade in a week, an art piece created and lost but never forgotten. A piece that will accompany the bride into her new journey.
