House of Frankenstein (1944)

House of Frankenstein stars the three famous Universal horror movie monsters: Dracula, The Wolf Man and The Frankenstein monster. Lon Chaney Jr. plays The Wolf Man but other roles have been recast. John Carradine is Dracula and Henry Strange is the Frankenstein monster. There is also Boris Karloff who plays doctor Gustav Niemann who is apparently a fan of the Frankensteins. It's fun to see him play the scientist for a change.

Dracula is in the movie only very shortly. He dies within the first half hour or so. It's a bit weird, like they had two scripts and decided to combine them. John Carradine is a lot better vampire than Lon Chaney Jr., although the bat effects are inferior to those seen on Son of Dracula. The bat looks like a ball with cardboard wings attached, though it's only seen in silhouette.

I liked the end scene where the monster saves doctor Niemann from the hunchback character Daniel and also protects the doctor from the angry mod. It's a nice role reversal from earlier movies where the finale is usually a battle between the monster and the mad scientist. And it feels somehow very appropriate as Karloff played the creature first. I the I could ramble on about this but I think I'll keep this short.

I wasn't very invested in most of the things going on. The Dracula arc had a bit of a promise but it was over before it even really begun. The Wolf Man was fine but the love triangle between Larry Talbot, Daniel and Ilonka was tedious. In closing,  I think the ending with the doctor and the monster really is genuinely good. It is a welcome change of pace from the usual shenanigans.
