The Way They Mix

The 'Different Elements' of the Democratic party, William Jennings Bryan, Grover Cleveland and Henry Watterson, engage in fisticuffs. 

The caption reads "Bryan says the Different Elements of the Democratic Party Cannot Mix - But They Certainly Do." 

The three represented different parts of the Democratic Party, and were vociferously opposed to each other.

The Causes of the Lack of Harmony in the Democratic Party

June 28th, 1902

William Jennings Bryan, Henry Watterson, and Grover Cleveland point at each other, each standing beside (respectively) The Commoner Bryan Speech, Courier-Journal Watterson Editorials, and Harmony? Dinner Speech. 

The caption reads “As Pointed Out be Three of Its Leaders who Claim to Know.”

The three men were among the most influential in the Democratic party, with Bryan and Cleveland potential 1904 presidential candidates.

Water for the Elephant

May 10th, 1902

Dave Hill and Hank Watterson carry the Democratic Issue 1904 Water Cure toward the GOP elephant at the Political Show 1904 Campaign Circus; Benjamin Tillman attempts to intervene with a pump and pitchfork. 

Hill and Watterson were moderate Democrats, while Tillman was a crazed racist Democrat. The Water Cure refers to both a common Spa treatment, and a controversial method of torture used by American soldiers in the Philippines. The problem was that any attempt by the Democrats to claim the moral high ground was undercut by their racist party members.

Bread In Old Kentucky

April 14, 1908

Chefs Governor Johnson and Henry Watterson knead the Kentucky Delegation dough. A cookbook 'Marse Henry's Cookbook, Presidential Possibilities etc. etc.' hangs from a hook

Contemporary news accounts relate that Johnson was speaking at Watterson's home on political matters including states rights.

A Kentucky Airship

October 15th, 1901

Henry Watterson attempts to fly the large eared donkey of Kentucky Democracy all the way from the Governorship of Kentucky to the Presidency. 

The caption reads “Henry Watterson of Kentucky, sets a big task for this flying machine.”

Contemporary news accounts relate that Watterson had declared that he was running for the Governorship of Kentucky as a prelude to running for President in 1904.

A Kentucky Derby classic recipe

With the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby just one day away, it's time again to share my favorite mint julep recipe, attributed to Henry Watterson, the colorful and sometimes controversial editor of The Courier-Journal:

"Pluck the mint gently from its bed, just as the dew of the evening is about to form on it. Select the choicer sprigs only, but do not rinse them. Prepare the simple syrup and measure out a half-tumbler of whiskey. Pour the whiskey into a well-frosted silver cup, throw the other ingredients away, and drink the whiskey."

I'll be avoiding juleps at Churchill Downs today for the 140th Kentucky Oaks. My pick: Fashion Plate, the daughter of... Old Fashioned. Still pondering the Derby field.
