hc; bunny corcoran devours sweet treats. I mean he is a huge fan of bakeries, cake, chocolate, little treats, pastries; along with booze and wine. he one time tries to mix them together and ends up experiencing the consequences, henry calls it. bunny eats too much and starts to get sick of it, but on his birthday, henry brings him a cupcake in a bag that he specifically ordered a few days before and truly realizes he’s falling for a treat-addicted blonde mess

Francis to Richard when he came back from Manchester.

Francis: “ This, Gieves and Hawks. It’s a nice navy blue wool linen and silk suit. Doubles breasted with peak lapels, high waisted trousers with a single pleat and side adjusters”

Richard: “ oh, this is very lovely ”

Francis: “Yes, Yes. It’s matched with a diamond teal silk tie over there in that bag and with sterling oval enamel cuff links. This grey suit is a nice wool cashmere so I thought, why not. This one…”

I find it so adorable that Francis sat Richard down and gave him a full blown shopping haul.

I have never spoken about the concept of race in The Secret History, because that feels almost akin to opening Pandora's jar, but I sometimes think that Charles' appearance, being white, blonde, and often described as angelic, has a lot do with the way he is sometimes coddled by readers despite the fact that he tried to kill his own sister because of the sense of ownership he felt over her. He does sometimes exhibit signs of childlike vulnerability, to be sure, and someone can do this and still be abusive, but I think his angelic blonde appearance impacts how his actions are interpreted. Of course this could be said about any of the characters as the novel is concerned with aesthetics, but Charles seems to be coddled in a way the others aren't, and him being blonde feels directly tied to this.

I also have thoughts about race in relation to Henry, but I'm not yet brave enough to go there.

(No, I am not calling anyone racist for liking Charles (he's irredeemable in my eyes, but I'm not the thought police) or being interested in his character, or any of the other characters. This also is not aimed at any specific users, nor is this post intended to incite drama; I have had thoughts about race in the novel for years, but have never vocalised them online before.)
