Pianist and educator Henry Butler has been a trailblazer and flamekeeper of the great New Orleans musical legacy. Not only does he keep the rich tradition of jazz but he also plays the blues, jump swing, country, and gospel.
Born blind at birth, Henry studied with a legion of great New Orleans pianists like Professor Longhair, Tuts Washington, and Allen Toussaint.
I had a chance to speak with Henry before his performance at The Iridium and we talked about the origins of jazz music as well as the history of stride piano. His trio consists of Alex Blake on bass and Joe Dyson on drums.
