Sangre de Cristo NHA celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month with UFC Champion Henry Cejudo

Alamosa, CO (October 12) –

Last month, Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area hosted the event Hispano Heroes at Alamosa High School. The featured guest speaker was Henry Cejudo, who is an Olympic Gold Medalist in Wrestling, National Wrestling Hall of Fame Member, and UFC World Flyweight Champion. He spoke to community members and students about the importance of perseverance, dedication, passion, and having pride in oneself. 

Cejudo grew up in south central L.A., the son of undocumented immigrant parents and youngest of 7 children. His family endured poverty, and Henry’s father was absent for most of his life, struggling with drug and alcohol addiction. His father died when Henry was only 20. By the time Henry turned 21, he won an Olympic Gold Medal in Wrestling, winning as an underdog competitor. Ten years later on August 4th, 2018 Cejudo fought the 7-year undefeated flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson, and won.  

His nickname “The Messenger” comes from his belief that his success is a platform to spread a greater message. Henry Cejudo stated, “You can accomplish anything that you dedicate yourself to. Think how many people struggle across the world, across the country. I know anything is possible if you set your mind, body, soul and faith to it. MMA, fighting, winning the Olympics – it’s only a platform for me to help others. It’s just a tool. I have a purpose and a meaning in life, and I have to fulfill that. Being a champion is great, but it is more important to be an inspiration and a role model for other people.”
