I'm sure you've mentioned this before, but what's your thesis about? :)

I haven’t, actually! I’m in my second year in my PhD program. In the US at least we don’t start writing our dissertation until the end of our 3rd/into the 4th year. My areas of research are intersections of gender, sexuality, and empire in 19th century British literature, the Gothic, and female detective fiction. Lots of overlap there. So it’ll end up being somewhere thereabouts but I haven’t narrowed it down yet.

My MA thesis was about gendered power struggles in narrative formats between Marian Halcombe and Walter Hartright as they fought for the same “hero” role (wrt Laura) in Wilkie Collins’s The Woman in White, an absolute fave of mine.

thoughts on Troy: Fall of A City? I see you weren't a fan (neither was I but none of my classics-inclined friends have seen it, so interested to hear someone else's opinion!)

Hi there! I think more than anything I was disappointed with it, I wanted so much for it to be good but it just didn't work on so many levels. I did think that some of the cinematography was good and looked nice. I did like some of the casting, particularly Achilles and Patroclus, but then their scenes were so poorly written that it didn't matter. I'll admit I've forgotten quite a bit of it by this point, which in itself is telling because if I like a program I'll remember it well. I found myself not caring about anyone, there was a real lack of emotional depth, so by the time everyone was dead it was more a relief that the programme was over. Honestly in the end it was just....boring.
