Vail values the people he loves over his own life. So when he was forced to take Nick down on that plane for his own safety, it was one of the greatest regrets of his life.

He took the life of the person who meant so much to him. How was he supposed to live with himself?

He still can't look at Nick sometimes, if he thinks too hard about that.

Vail lays awake at night constantly wondering why Set chose him. He can't wrap his head around why Ahmanet and Set picked him.

He's not the right choice.

He assumes it must be the blood on his hands from years of war.

It has to be.

Vail grew up in the backwoods of one of the poorest counties and towns in Tennessee, with three half siblings he essentially raised while his mom worked long hours and the boyfriends that stuck around were useless.

Vail is a doormat because he had to be one in order to keep the peace with his mom. She had her own trauma, and she took that out on Vail. He learned it was easier to nod, go along with it, and deal with the consequences of it later.

It's why he is the way he is with Nick.

Old habits die hard.
