The Mummy & The Mummy Returns ; 1999 & 2001
I love these movies and rewatch them a lot. There’s a like video montage that plays in a trailer/commercial for a production company that would play in the reviews of Josie and the Pussycats (I’m pretty sure) and some of the clips in the movie montage are from The Mummy Returns. I don’t know; that preview is very nostalgic to me so any movies featured in it are therefore also quite nostalgic feeling.
These movies are just so fun. The love and chemistry between all the characters really makes these movies what they are. It also doesn’t hurt that Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz look so beautiful in them.
I got these posters on Letterboxd. I impulsively bought a year’s patron membership while waiting for a movie to start at a drive in. I don’t regret it.

I’ve already written fics about Rick's mom, and another where he discovers he has an older sister. But WHAT IF his mom is actually alive??? Like, something happened to her and Rick got lost and ended up at the orphanage. She spent years thinking he died, and Rick thought the same about her… BUT THEN Rick's mom goes to Cairo again after having some strange dreams (which were actually memories of what really happened but her mind had blocked it) and saw a boy who looked very much like her son… It's not Rick but Alex. So Rick shows up and like there's an old woman who looks like him????
Headcanon: Rick can't sing very well and sometimes he gets carried away and ends up shouting rather than singing (especially when he's really happy). Evelyn finds it cute, but Jonathan's and Cleo's ears disagree. But when it comes to singing lullabies to Alex, he is very careful, keeping his voice steady and calm. Alex has always liked Rick’s voice, even before he was born. When the boy had nightmares because of what happened in TMR, Alex would relax feeling Evy’s hugs and hearing Rick’s voice. Jonathan also helps by telling cool stories that make Alex forget, for a while, the horrors of that week.
The Mummy (2017 Tom Cruise Film) C-.
I was about 30 minutes into this movie, and I wrote the following text to my friend:
///
I'm currently taking my mind off of things watching the Tom Cruise movie The Mummy, where he tried to step in and take over for Brendan Fraser and it's… bad. I am 15 minutes in and Tom Cruise is stealing artifacts from Iraq (Apparently his character works for Hobby Lobby or something), hooked up with a woman just so he could steal from her, grave robbing, killing as many locals as he can, and then a British woman steps in and wants to take all the antiquities for herself. Apparently she works for the British Museum or something.
Like I'm mad at the movie because it was supposed to be a fun turn my brain off movie. Not one that is revealing all of the structural issues involved in the American century.
I don't want to just not finish the movie because I wanna be able to write an angry rant about it on socials, I'm sure you understand. It's just, you know movie is bad when I want to go back and continue washing my dishes instead of seeing more of the movie.
Vince Mancini of Uproxx gave the film a negative review, writing: "If you like incomprehensible collections of things that vaguely resemble other things you might've enjoyed in the past, The Mummy is the movie for you."
Last one:
I'm 30 minutes in and I think this gives the best encapsulation of how bad this movie is. None of these dishes were clean when I started this movie.

I wanted to write to this person on Tumblr that does movie review stuff and I guess film analysis stuff too, because this movie was considered so bad that not only did it destroy The Mummy franchise reboot, which has technically been around since the 1930s, it was also so bad that it destroyed the, ahem, Dark Universe franchise, which was supposed to spiral from this movie, which was about an organization trying to control supernatural monsters from classic films, such as Dracula, Frankenstein’s monster, and many others.
I ended up watching this just simply because I was not going to let a Tom Cruise movie beat me, and because mid-month, I’m focusing on trying to get more done so I didn’t want to just give up on this.
It wasn’t good.
It did just the things that you would expect from a Tom Cruise version of The Mummy, and nothing more. It was yet another thing where the most powerful being that the world has seen in millennia has almost unimaginable power but is no match for one (1) determined white American. Also, I don’t know what it says that as a straight guy he ends up sacrificing unimaginable power for one (1) woman that was vaguely nice to him. Are straight men alright??
That moment you realize in The Mummy Returns, even though Imhotep summoned four mummy guards, Ardeth, Rick, Jonathan, and Evy only kill three. Rewatch the scene, there’s the one shot by Rick in the air, the one split in half by Ardeth and then gunned down by Evy, and then the one who get crushed on the wall.
I looked this up and apparently, the death of the 4th mummy was cut from the movie. So they intentionally created a continuity error lol.
