Hello! I've spent the past year writing a thesis about solarpunk's foundation/genealogy. The work you and your fellows did with Solarpunk Press was monumentally helpful. I wanted to ask you, if you were willing, about works you read casually today/have read previously that you'd consider "essential solarpunk." Feel free to decline; I understand that unsolicited requests for conversation can be unnerving, but I wanted to drop a line your way, anyway. Hope things are manageable/well for you!
Hey! Reaching out is totally welcome.
Apart from Solarpunk Press, I also recommend Wings of Renewal, which was the first solarpunk collection to be published in English and in definite continuity with the narrative of solarpunk that originated on Tumblr in late 2014. (I think SpP beat Wings to print by a month or two, but that’s only because we could publish one story at a time. They were already seeking submissions before we had the idea for the press.)
I’m currently working on an article arguing that Cory Doctorow’s new book “Walkaway” is definitely solarpunk, so I’d check that out. afaik Doctorow has never addressed the existence of solarpunk, but I’d say he’s been writing borderline-solarpunk work for a long time now – particularly, “Pirate Cinema” and the short story “Lawful Interception” deal with a setting shaped in part by environmental crises, and focus on punk or countercultural organizing to pursue positive change.
There are a few solarpunk webcomics, the names of which are escaping me at the moment, but I think those are worth checking out and including.
And the Sunvault anthology (which I’m being published in!!!) is scheduled for publication in late August, so definitely check that out once it arrives.
