@heraldecember again: Schedule Slip! :'D I was away for a long weekend and didn't have much time for drawing.

9 - Sease: Azure, a dexter cubit arm argent issuant from base holding a carp proper. It's. It's a multilayered canting design. Carpe Diem, Seize the Day, geddit? /booed off stage

10 - Pekala: Vert, a man in turkish dress passant, holding a bindle. Ok so typing the word into google translate told me that pekala is apparently finnish for "fool" and also turkish for "OK, alright," so I gave the guy turkish traditional clothing and based his pose off of the Fool tarot card and gave him a shrugging, devil-may-care attitude, like "alright, let's see where this goes ¯\_(ツ)_/¯" The shield is circular because that appears to have been a common shape in the medieval ottoman army.

11 - Southmallow: Argent a chevron vert, three mallow flowers purpure. It's mallow flowers and a big ol arrow pointing southwards.

12 - Ostford: Or, a bend wavy azure, barrulet embattled cendree. "Ost" is an obsolete french term for army, so I imagined a town that came up due to a military force guarding the ford on a river, hence the wall bisecting it.

Since Twitter is dead/dying/currently-not-a-good-place-to-do-this, and since I rejoined tumblr earlier this year, I figured I might as well primarily host this year’s #Heraldecember here, with a designated blog.

Heraldecember is a yearly art/design challenge for people who enjoy creating heraldic art, obviously inspired by Inktober. I’ll be reblogging all tagged entries, so please consider participating.

This year we are holding our third Heraldecember in succession, the themes of 2020 and 2021 being “Holidays” and “Emotions” respectively, with countless entries from users on Twitter, Instagram, Reddit and Discord. I hope that this event can find a similarly lively audience here.

This year’s theme will be “Places & People”, the prompt list will be posted on November 30th.

Heraldecember 2022 Week One

1. Delagol, Protector of the Red Wood Blazon: "Per fess indented embowed gules and argent, a sword palewise argent sheathed gules."

2. Birkey, the town "Beside the Brook" Blazon: "Argent, a fess wavy azure, a chief embattled vert."

3. Wyldecliff, Knight of the Round Chamber Blazon: "Brunatre, issuant from base a lasso surrounding a revolver cylinder or."

4. Michalenko, "Under Protection of Michael" Blazon: "Purpure, a cross argent in sinister canton a spearhead of the same, overall issuant from base a demibezant counterchanged."

5. Lornesse, the City in Grief Blazon: "Quarterly, I. Azure, a tower argent, II. Per pale argent and or, in dexter three escutcheons azure, in sinister a bend sinister gules, III. 6. Dorcoast, the "Golden Coast" city Blazon: "Per fess purpure and azure, in chief a decrescent or, issuant from fess an island proper, in base a base engrailed or charged with a demi-shovel proper."

5- Lornesse: Sable, a lighthouse argent, lit, gutte de sang from window, issuant a wavy gules. Looking up bits of the word on etymonline got me "lorn: abandoned, left alone, lonely" and "ness: point of land running into the sea, obsolete except in place names and surnames" and i wound up with an elaborate concept of a lone lighthouse with a tragic past on a spit of land, and got a little heavy-handed with the blood imagery.

6- Dorcoast: Or, a bend wavy azure, sinisher escallop rose, dexter whelk argent. Canting for d'or, gold. A coastal city with golden sands, perhaps.

7- Deraney: Purpure, crown inverted or issuant three guttes de sang. I got fixated on the "ran" bit as a rhyme for "reign" and it put me in mind of a family that swears up and down they're just temporarily embarrassed royals, they definitely did their family tree and they deserve the crown, no don't look it up

8- Harrisow: Bleu celeste, two clouds above a hand dexter apaumy fesswise sinister argent. Turning again to etymonline, Harris as in the place in Scotland comes from "Gaelic na-h-earaidh, "that which is higher."" I was like ok, what would you sow in a high place? Then had this idea of a family who produces clouds, either by magic or science.

I said I'd do Heraldecember, and boy am I! At first I was a little uncertain about what to do and nervous over my lack of experience, but yesterday I started getting ideas, and once I started drawing them I couldn't stop! So uh here's the first four days' worth already, because I got carried away :'D

1: Delagol: Or, a chief enarched reversed invected vert with fawn dormant proper. Looking up bits of the names on etymonline gave me dell and a colloquial offshoot dingle, ("a deep dell or secluded hollow, usually wooded") and it put me in mind of a protected glade, with a fawn safely asleep. Perhaps this town started out in a forest, or has a culture of sanctuary.

2: Birkey: Argent, a bend tenne billetty sable. A canting (punning) design that looks like birch bark. The brown stripe represents the inner layer of bark that is revealed when you pull up the white.

3: Wyldecliff: Argent, per fesse wavy bleu celeste between three beach roses rose. I really love wild beach roses, which happily grow right along cliff faces overlooking the sea.

4: Michalenko: Azure, three estoile over goose close argent mantling gosling or. I looked up the archangel Michael, and a common trait across cultures is of him being a protector. There are a LOT of crests with Michael holding a shield and sword or stomping on dragon-satan, though, and I didn't much feel like drawing that. I went back to the idea of safety and warmth from day 1, and drew a goose protecting its gosling at night. (As a thematic plus, goose is a traditional food at British Michaelmas feasts! Though "Michalenko" suggests a more easterly origin to the family.)
