The Challenge...a tribute to modern art (1975). Footage of great modern artists in their studios creating and commenting on their work, with narration and commentary by Orson Welles.

This is fine? Like, it’s fun to see Orson Welles talking about modern art and the evolution of form and medium, but it’s a pretty straight forward documentary that runs through the motions of form and function. I quite like the way that it’s shot – particularly the shots of people taking in the artworks – but other than that, there’s nothing particularly memorable about it. 6/10.

TODAY IN GINNY! - March 13 - Herbert Kline

Herbert Kline (1909) was a top flight documentary director. HEART OF SPAIN, REHEARSAL FOR WAR, and CRISIS were just three of these. He received an Oscar nomination in 1975 for his documentary THE CHALLENGE...A TRIBUTE TO MODERN ART.  He is also credited with writing the story for LOVE IS A HEADACHE (1938), which I never before realized was a documentary. OK, that's a cheap shot. In addition to his fine documentaries in Spain, Czechoslovakia, and Poland during wars in Europe, he also directed some mainstream films such as A BOY, A GIRL, AND HIS DOG, THE FIGHTER, and some scenes of A JOURNEY FOR MARGARET.  The photo is of Jacques Lemaire, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Herbert Kline recording their time with the Lincoln Brigade in Spain. By the way, despite his bravery in working behind Nazi lines and exposing tyranny in Europe he was later blacklisted during the 1950s.
