CHARACTER CREATION QUESTIONS FOR WRITERS. @herdragcnfire says How much did their concept change from your initial idea to their current form?
OOF , HE'S DONE A COMPLETE 180 , NOT GONNA LIE . it still surprises me too , tbh . when I initially created Maron sometime in . . . 2019 , I think ? all I had in mind was to create a character that was a villain , loosely based on Euron , but less insane . I went in with the full intention of not only making an antagonist but a downright villain ; Ramsay Bolton level , basically . I knew he needed to be clever , because all I had to go on was Theon remembering Maron lied a lot and in order to do that successfully , you need to have a certain intellect , but apart from that , I had nothing . so I thought I'll make myself a character that supports the Greyjoy rebellion , that hates the Greenlanders , that is pretty unpredictable and frankly , racist against non - Ironborn and stubborn to a fault , basically ready to kill anyone who wasn't Ironborn themselves .
well . . . we all know how that turned out .
some elements from his original design are still there ofc . he still supports the Old Way , he still wants independence , he can still be incredibly cruel and hateful and definitely is a highly dangerous character that quickly lends himself into becoming an antagonist or villain , but he's grown into so much more . since making him I've learned that he's capable of falling in love and of loving deeply and openly with no fear or reluctance to do so whatsoever . I learned that the motivation for his fight for independence isn't revenge as I initially had planned , but the unconditional love for his people who , he believes , deserve better . I've learned that he's cheeky and playful and utterly in love with the sea and the feeling of freedom it provides . I've learned that he smiles and laughs very easily and that his emotions show on his face all the time . that he's not at all afraid to let others see and know what's going on with him . I learned that he's capable of being diplomatic and ready to hear other opinions , even if they are uncomfortable . I learned that he's even willing to be personally ridiculed if that might lead to an advantage for his people . I learned that he'd be a fantastic father , set on doing everything differently from how his own father did it . that he 100% is a family person , putting his "tribe" and community before anything else . that he's generous and respectful so long as others treat him the same way . that he's a bit of a sassy diva , too , at times .
I guess it's save to say that not much of his initial design is left . or rather , those first elements are still there , but they're only one part of a whole and , without wanting to toot my own horn here , I believe pretty well - rounded character that I am incredibly proud of and love to the end of the world and back .
