The late Eleventh Duke of Devonshire’s sitting room was decorated for the Sixth Duke in the 1830″s by the Crace family. Deborah Mitford Cavendish, the Dowager Duchess, couldn’t imagine hiring a professional decorator, someone unfamiliar with the house, when it came into their possession. Two years later Nancy Lancaster remarked “You are lucky. If I had done it, you would have had to sell it to pay for it.” Featured in The World of Interiors, October 2001. Photography by Simon Upton.
