Private Chatsworth
The late Eleventh Duke of Devonshire’s sitting room was decorated for the Sixth Duke in the 1830″s by the Crace family. Deborah Mitford Cavendish, the Dowager Duchess, couldn’t imagine hiring a professional decorator, someone unfamiliar with the house, when it came into their possession. Two years later Nancy Lancaster remarked “You are lucky. If I had done it, you would have had to sell it to pay for it.” Featured in The World of Interiors, October 2001.
