Ways I Have Felt Hermes since I started college

So, I’m not very active on this blog, but I want to be, so I figured the best way to do that is to share something. I started college in August and of course it was a very new part of my life, and I think a few things I’ve done/seen have reminded me of Hermes

I went to a Renaissance Fair and asked him to help me find something I could use to honor him better in a college friendly way since I can’t candles or any open flames. Anyways, I walk into this one shop and my attention immediately goes to a D20 dice which is the size of my fist. I roll it around in my hand and I whisper, “Hey Hermes if you’re over my shoulder and are thinking what I’m thinking, I’ll pay whatever I roll for it.” I laugh because if I roll a 20 and it’s $20 that wouldn’t be all that surprising. I roll a 16, I ask the shopkeeper who is all the way on the other side of the store, how much for the D20 he tells me.... $16. It now sits on the top of my bookshelf with all other things i keep that remind me of Hermes 

Now, this is slightly out of order, and goes back to my orientation weekend when I was feeling pretty lonely. I was the only girl in my entire group, which wasn’t a huge problem, but I really had difficulty keeping up with their conversations about sports players, like yeah I knew how the games worked and if they had been talking game mechanics I could have feel right in, but nope. They were talking about specific players I had to Google just to see if I ever so faintly knew them. I did not. My orientation group met outside and I usually got there really early to enjoy the morning air. I remember saying something under my breath to the line of, “I need to make more friends.” A few minutes later a hawk flew to the tree above me I smiled because I rarely saw them when I was home since I live in the city. Then a few minutes later a girl walks outside and sits across from me in the chair the hawk had been above, we awkwardly said hey and then saw each other a few more times throughout orientation weekend- we are now very good friends and although the hawk could have been just chance (full disclosure my college is on a mountain, so wildlife is not uncommon at all), at the time it felt like him.

Playing games with my friends in general, I had brought a lot of dice with me to college,some because I really hoped to get involved in D&D, others because I wanted to have small things to honor Hermes around my dorm room. Before I leave to go play i try to make a habit of inviting Hermes to sit and watch, or even influence (whatever he wants basically) then I head out. Sometimes it feels like he is there just watching, even amused by a really bad roll on my part and the outcome of it. 

My open window. I keep my window open a lot for fresh air, there’s a screen on it and I live on an upper floor, so I sometimes will sit by it and pray or just run things by the gods in a, “oh, hey I’m about to do something stupid, could you either A. stop my or B. be there when I do it,’ sort of fashion. I was sitting by the window earlier on in the semester and was having one my daily reviews with Hermes and basically said to feel free to stop in, I’ll leave some tea and chocolate by the TV. A moment later a huge gust of wind came in through the window, all of my posters on my wall moved a bit, and one in particular fell, it happened to be one I had put up in dedication to Hermes. So, I suppose he might like the tea and chocolate thing after all.

A bit of a vent post but I have a person in my life who mistreats me from time because of her own insecurities and like the idiot I am I can never swear her completely off because I keep finding reasons to try to make our relationship healthier. And it’s become more open and honest as of late, but there are still times she uses me as, for lack of a better term, her emotional scratching post.

Today was one of those days.

She saw some less-than-ideal living conditions in my living space - I will always be the first to admit that I am a slob, especially when my mental health is spiraling downward - but she used that as an excuse to tell me that I do nothing, have done nothing all my life, and that all I’ve done is laze around while SHE was the hero and took care of everything else.

It was bait and I took it.

It wasn’t the right thing to do. The right thing to do would have been to separate myself from her and calm down somewhere else. You don’t have to respond to anger with more anger, and it honestly is usually smarter to let them stew in their own toxicity while you leave and center yourself. Either way, I exploded at her and asserted myself the best way I could - which was difficult, considering how much of a fuming incoherent mess I was. I called her out on all the times I had been there, holding her hand, supporting her, caring for her through her chronic illness, everything. Because after all we’ve been through, all I put myself through for her sake, all I sacrificed, I could not believe that she could and still does continue to invalidate everything I’ve done for....what? A small mess? The satisfaction of being right? The small feeling of victory that comes from yelling at someone else’s flaws instead of recognizing your own?

It hurt. And I know for a fact that she hasn’t learned her lesson and probably never will. She’s too far gone, and too comfortable with how things are.

Well anyways, so here I am, recovering from that emotional hurricane, and it does feel like there’s a storm in my heart. In my head too. There’s lightning at the edge of my words as I go about running my errands and even as I try to let it go, the rain is still there. And I’m driving home, and I’m driving, and I’m questioning if there is any point to any of this, when out of nowhere, a car makes a one lane transfer ahead of me. And as I look up and take note of the shiny black surface of the car driving in front, I read the license plate.

And it just says “Hug.”

Out of all the cars in the city I’m in, in the state I’m in, in the world I’m in, I somehow managed to find myself behind the one vehicle with a kind message, however small, for me during a time when I needed a bit of kindness more than ever.

Call me an optimist. Call me insane. Call me any name in the book you’d like. But I choose to believe that the one single word etched on that license plate was a sign from a higher, kinder power, and I think you all have a pretty good idea who it is.

My life can really suck sometimes. Humans can really suck sometimes. And when the people around us choose to be right instead of choosing to be kind, it can leave us feeling so goddamned drained and hopeless. I know I get that way, and honestly still sort of do.

But even so, I believe that there are forces out there in the universe that stand by us even when things fall apart. And for that, I am truly, truly blessed.

while cleaning today i found a piece of foreign currency and not two seconds later a book of mythology. by chance i flopped it open and immediately landed on hermes smiling up at me. i had a feeling He was reaching out to me. is this Him? i’m fairly sure but what do i do now?

Hello! Um, going off of what you’ve told me, yeah, I’d say Hermes might be trying to get your attention.

When I first found him he had been sending me a lot of signs in the forms of several things (hawks, coincidences, and finally, a dream where he showed up and ate an offering I had left him the night before.) If he’s trying to get your attention, he might have something to tell you. You can try reaching out to him in the method you feel most comfortable with, introduce yourself and ask for his guidance/ask about what he wants to talk to you about. It can be a little intimidating to speak to any new God for the first time, but Hermes is an understanding guy and so long as you come from a place of respect and sincerity I think he’ll appreciate hearing from you.

You could try talking to him through divination. He also sends messages through dreams a lot so you could ask him to speak to you there. Or you could just send a prayer and ask for some more signs. Hermes is not subtle, at least not when he really wants to talk to you, so I think he’ll try to respond in a way that is clear to you.

Hey Guys

Happy Belated Wednesday. As I’m sure most of you know, the world is....pretty out of sorts right now. The Corona Virus has a lot of people scared, stressed, and anxious about the future. And it’s been a very humbling thing for all of us. We see people at their best, and their worst, in our communities, families, government, everywhere. And while we are trying to look forward and think long-term, many people, like me, are just trying to take it one day at a time.

So, to help us get through this, I’d like to hear more from all of you. Send in asks. Send in thoughts. Send in stories, and songs, and happy memories and recipes or crafts that mean a lot to you. They can be Hermes related, or they can just be things that put a smile on your face. But whatever they may be, whatever keeps you cheery and reminds you of all that’s good in the world, go ahead and send it in and I’ll put it up on my blog. It’ll be a cool way to get to know all of you better and maybe share tips and advice on how to build our practice.

It’s Wednesday, aka Hermes’s designated day, and I haven’t posted directly at yall in years, but today I feel compelled to, and it’s to say that I’m here, I know it’s hard right now, and you are not alone. When we walk with Hermes, we are never alone.

Today I choose to post the song I named this blog for many many years ago.
